Time to say goodbye!
Friday, 16 December 2011
The SportAccord World Mind Games are over and in the final day we knew the surprising results of both the men and women events.
At the start of the event today we had clear leaders in Vachier Lagrave in the men's category and Cmilyte in the women's category. Whilst the French player coasted to a joint first place with a number of draws, Viktoria Cmilyte unfortunately lost both her games.
hou2.jpgMaxime was also a little bit unlucky with his results as a dark Hungarian horse crept up and snatched the Gold medal in the last round thanks to a better tie-break. we congratulate Zoltan Almasi for his great fighting spirit. The women event was won by Hou Yifan who continues to astound observers with her maturity and great play at the age of 17!
Now it is time to  make a synopsis of the Games, the heroes and underdogs of this great multi sports competition.
The women's World Champion Hou Yifan from China proved again, that she is the best chess player in the world. Her results were brilliant - she was able to clearly win 2 of 3 competitions! Only in the rapid event, where she took 6th place , was this not really sucessful. Anyway, we congratulate the Chinese player with this great results!
The Russian former world champion Alexandra Kosteniuk can be proud of her results also. She won the rapid competition and took the 4th and 3rd place in blitz and blindfold accordingly. And last but not least - she was selected as the Ambassador of this games among the other great players and officials of 5 mind sports. We can't even imagine who can do this job better then her. She was brilliant - on the chess board and outside it.
Maxime Vachier-Lagrave from France seems to be the hero of the men's competition. He won the blitz and was 3rd in the blindfold competition - and only due to the tie-breaks. Do not forget about Wang Hao from China - his performance in the rapid was brilliant.  5,5 points out of 7, and sole 1st place. lagrave.jpg
We respect the surprise result of Zoltan Almasi from Hungary, who  won the blindfold event. And, of course, we like to mention, that Vugar Gashimov from Azerbaijan was the most stable player. 5th, 2nd and 3rd places - this were his results in these tournaments.
We are grateful to the participants, officials, SportAccord team and, of course, the organizers for this unforgettable show!

Blindfold. Women and men
Thursday, 15 December 2011
victorija.jpgMost of the elite players were not really preoccupied about the blindfold event before the beginning of the SportAccord World Mind Games. Rapid and blitz were the really important ones and indeed we had great events! Blindfold was just a show.

Now everything has changed. After the second day of blindfold,  the tension can be cut with a butter knife! They are happy to win and come out beaming after a well played game. These great chessplayers are accustomed to win and blindfold tests their ultimate skills of memory, visualization and calculation.

We have a sole leader after 5 rounds of the women's competition - its Viktorija Cmilyte from Lithuania, who scored 4.5 points out of 5 games. Her games have been brilliant so far and we welcome the perfomance of this charming Lithuanian lady.
She is closely followed by the women's world Champion Hou Yifan and if she falters this could be decisive with two round to play.
Both ladies face great opponents in the sixth round tomorrow and anything can happen!

In the men, Maxime Vachier Lagrave once again is showing his strength in blindfold chess this time but he is also closely followed by a number of players.

Blindfold. Women and men
Wednesday, 14 December 2011
img_5112.jpgIt was a great, unforgettable, incredibly interesting show! The best fighters of the world fighting each other in blindfold. And they did it the best way - although before the game almost all of the ladies worried about their performance. But they did it brilliant - especially for this kind of game.

It was Nana Dzagnidze  from Georgia who was the best after 2 rounds. Looks like she is in a great form here on the SportAccord Mind Games. The Georgian player took the 3-d place in rapid and was close to top-3 in blitz. And she is very confident - it might be the main thing during the competitions between such great players.

Ju Wenjun from China, Viktorija Cmilyte (LTU) and Elina Danielian (ARM) are half of a point behind her. The fact is that all of these players were not really successful during rapid and blitz. So, they have a good chance to improve the situation.

ivanchukmain.jpgThe men were solid - almost no blunders, good - as usual - quality of games. The sole leader is top-seeded Vassily Ivanchuk - 2 out of 2! We have to mention, that the past events of SportAccord Mind Games were not successful for the Ukraine genius - for example, he was the last in rapid. 5 players - Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (AZE), Vugar Gashimov (AZE), Ruslan Ponomariov (UKR), Maxime Vachier Lagrave (FRA), Lenier Dominguez (CUB), are half of a point behind him.

Tomorrow we expect other great battles during 6 rounds (3 - men, 3 - women).

Maxime Vachier- Lagrave: France get gold in blitz!
Tuesday, 13 December 2011
la.jpgMaxime gained the first Gold medal for France here in the blitz event, competing with such famous players as Alexander  Grischuk and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov!

We had this interview with him after his last game.

 - Congratulations! What do you feel now?
 - Thank you! You have no idea how tired I am right now! The fact is that, I usually play blitz events on a good level. For example, I won the European Blitz Championship. But blitz events always demand a lot of energy.  You need to have maximum concentration and every time its a new situation. So now I feel just that I want to go to sleep - as soon as possible. (Maxim smiled) Of course, later I will feel happy.

 - What can you say about your perfomance in a whole?
 - I finished the first day with 5,5 out of 8. And it could be better, because I did not convert some winning positions. But today I scored 6,5 out of 7 being extremely lucky. I won 2 completely lost and 2 completely drawn positions.

— How can you evaluate this year in general?
- Sometimes it was nice, for example, I perfomed very good in Wijk aan Zee. But The European Team championship looked like a disaster.

- What about your life outside the chess board?
- 1,5 years ago I finished my University studies. I am totally a professional chess player. And my life this year was ordinary - more or less

Women. Blitz. Final day.
Tuesday, 13 December 2011
hou2.jpgHow Yifan from China became the gold medalist of the blitz competition of the SportAccord World Mind Games.

Her perfomance was brilliant: the world champion scored 11,5 points out of 15, winning 9 games and losing just one - in the last round when she had an unassailable lead.

We are happy for the former world champion Antoaneta Stefanova from Bulgaria, who had a strong finish, scoring 4,5 points in the last 5 rounds  and finally reached second place in this prestigious competition with a total of 9,5 points. stefanova.jpg

In 3rd place was Anna Muzychuk from Slovenia with the same score but less wins than Stefanova.

Nana Dzagnidze from Georgia and Alexandra Kosteniuk from Russia shared the 4th and 5th places with 9 points.

"The competition  was brilliant", - according to SportAccord President Hein Verbruggen, who visited the competition on the second day. - "It is a great spectacle".
